BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - An oil company facing tribal opposition for drilling wells on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation close to Lake Sakakawea proposes to drill 23 new wells near the Missouri River reservoir.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the federal Bureau of Land Management is reviewing drilling permit applications from Slawson Exploration.

A federal judge last year halted the drilling of the earlier wells when the Three Affiliated Tribes argued they should be farther from the lake under tribal policy. The company challenged the order, and the judge later reversed it. All of the company's wells on the reservation are on private land.

The tribe continues to fight the earlier wells in court, maintaining that tribal regulations should apply to all oil development within its reservation boundaries.
